Written on Valentine's Day 2000 as a joke. But I think it turned out pretty nice.
Despite the title, this is four lines short of a sonnet.
The essence of a being is what it is.
To view a rose's redness is to know:
The rose's essence as a rose is, viz:
The redness of its petals. Now you know.
The violet's horse is of a different hue:
A flower, yes, but still it's not the same.
Now realize that the following is true:
Its being's blueness: color makes it tame.
As sugar's sweetness brings the bees to swarm,
So does your sweetness give our love its form.
