Finally we got the space, and it's more-or-less set up and ready for computer habitation. So the move was set to be made this weekend.
There have been a few previous abstract rumblings about the move over the past six months or so, but I was not really informed of what the plan was until Thursday at our departmental meeting. At that time we were also informed that we would be coming in on Saturday to finish up the move. I asked what would happen if we had previous plans, but apparently that was not an allowed concept.
I made some comments and suggestions after that, which were valid and appeared to be received as such despite my ill-concealed hostility. Overall, though, it appeared that they had put some thought into it and that things might not go totally horribly. (Events later proved that neither of these impressions were true, but hey.)
After the meeting I was in an unaccountably good mood, even when I learned that there weren't enough packing boxes so I wouldn't be able to finish my packing and various other little problems cropped up. At one point I was sitting at my desk, hidden from all others by a large wall of boxes containing stuff I had packed before the box shortage became clear, and I heard my fellow bobs talking. One of them was quoting a user who said:
"My computer doesn't work."
From behind my box, I shouted:
"HOW DOES IT SMELL?"
For some reason this freaked people out. I couldn't say why.
