No, that's not the word. Annoying, yes, that's what I was looking for.
Cow-orker calls up.
CO: "How can I find out if a consultant is using Windows 95 or Windows 97?"
Me: "Well, there is no such thing as Windows 97--it's either Windows 95 or Windows 98. But that's not important. You can find out by going to the start menu--"
CO: "Oh, I have to be at his computer to find out?"
Me: [???] "Yes."
CO: "OK, what do I do?"
Me: "Click on the start menu, and on the left running up the side it should tell you what version of Windows you're running."
CO: "Where am I supposed to go, to Programs?"
[dull back-and-forth while this gets threshed out deleted]
CO: "OK. It says Windows 95."
Me: "Well then--"
CO: "Wait, I want to know what version of Excel he's using."
Me: "Oh, well that's different."
CO: "Yes, how can I find out if he's using Office 95 or Office 98?"
Me: "Well, it would be Office 95 or Office 97; there is no Office 98. Well, there is, but it's Macintosh-only."
CO: "The problem is that he's created some documents and we can't open them."
Me: "OK, well--"
CO: "Hold on. Can you wait a minute? I just want to ask--" [Puts down phone and apparently talks to someone.] "OK, I think I'm all set. I'll call you back if I have any more problems."
Me: "All right."
I'm worried that I might be losing my tech support touch. What the hell did I start babbling about Office version numbers for? How could that have possibly helped?
Oh well,
