<Ring Ring>
"Hello, student consulting; can I help you?"
"I'm in Excel, and I want to sort the entire table just by column E. How do I do that?"
"OK, have you selected the entire document?"
"Yes."
"OK, good. It will sort whatever you select. Now when you select 'sort' it should bring up a dialogue box. At the bottom of the box should be something labeled '1st Key'. Do you see that?"
"Yes. It says $E$1 now. Should I make it E1-20?"
"No. You should type $E$1:$E$20."
"Oh, I should type $E$1:E20?"
"No. You should type $E$1:$E$20."
"I should type $E1:$E20?"
"No. You should type $E$1:$E$20. This tells it that you want to use as criteria everything from column E, row 1 to column E, row 20."
"Oh, ok. So I should type $E$1:$E20?"
"No. You should type $E$1:$E$20."
"Oh, I get it. I should type $E$1:$E$20."
"Right."
"OK, thanks a lot."
I am not making any of this up.
