Is Sendmail still the only option for Unix? That's pretty pathetic.

Well, sendmail is the only Unix option, but if you don't mind using GNU instead the latest version of Emacs has some SMPT functionality. Of course then you have to buy into Don Bernstein's 'free hardware foundation' philosophical maunderings.

There was some hope that a real email solution for Unix would be on the way when Lotus announced that they would be porting cc:Mail to it. Unfortunately, Lotus was subsequently bought by Apple, whose hostility towards Unix is legendary -- they went so far as to base their most recent operating system release, Mac OS XP, on OpenVMS, Unix's most popular rival in the operating system market. (This isn't obvious on the surface, but if you take 'VMS' and subtract one from each letter you get 'MAC' -- sort of like the HAL/IBM thing in Stephen Spielberg's classic '2000: A Space Odyssey'.)
